South African rugby has entered a new sponsorship era, with Pick n Pay and FNB stepping in as major partners of SA Rugby. These new agreements bring financial backing to the national teams while also supporting grassroots and women’s rugby development.
As part of the deal, Pick n Pay’s logo will feature on the back of the Springbok jersey, while FNB takes over as the main sponsor on the front. This marks the end of MTN’s long-standing sponsorship, which saw the Springboks secure two Rugby World Cup victories. Fans will get their first glimpse of the new sponsorship branding when the Blitzboks compete at the Hong Kong Sevens, where the Pick n Pay logo will debut on their jerseys. In an unprecedented move, Pick n Pay’s branding will also appear on the front of all national teams’ training apparel.
Beyond professional rugby, these sponsorships will have a broader impact on South African rugby development. Pick n Pay has acquired naming rights for the Gold Cup, South Africa’s premier amateur club rugby competition. This investment will provide much-needed support for community rugby, ensuring that young and amateur players receive the resources needed to grow the sport at a grassroots level.
Another significant aspect of this partnership is its focus on women’s rugby. Pick n Pay has committed to sponsoring a new women’s rugby competition, with further details expected to be announced later this year. This aligns with SA Rugby’s ongoing efforts to expand and professionalize the women’s game, giving female players more opportunities to compete at an elite level.
SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer expressed enthusiasm about the new partnerships, stating that they go beyond financial backing. "Pick n Pay and FNB are not just sponsors; they are partners in growing the game at every level. Their commitment to community rugby and the women’s game is invaluable," he said.
Pick n Pay CEO Sean Summers also emphasized the company’s deep connection to South African communities. "For over 50 years, Pick n Pay has been part of South Africans’ lives. This sponsorship is about more than just branding—it’s about strengthening rugby from grassroots to the highest level," he noted.
With FNB and Pick n Pay on board, SA Rugby is poised for a promising future. These sponsorships bring financial stability, grassroots investment, and a greater focus on women’s rugby, ensuring that South African rugby continues to thrive both locally and internationally.
