Uber has launched a new and affordable ride-hailing option in South Africa, known as Uber Moto. This service allows passengers to book a motorcycle ride for short trips, offering a faster and cheaper way to travel within the city. The pilot phase has begun in Johannesburg’s CBD, with plans for a wider rollout depending on demand and user feedback.
Uber Moto has been operating in several countries for years, including Thailand, India, and Kenya, where it has become a popular choice for urban commuters. The concept is particularly suited to busy city environments, where motorcycles can navigate through traffic congestion far more efficiently than cars. With a starting price of just R18, Uber Moto is significantly more affordable than other ride-hailing options, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious passengers.
Uber is offering a special promotion: the first 50,000 customers who take an Uber Moto ride before 31 March 2025 will receive a 35% discount on their first three trips.
While motorcycle transport raises safety concerns, Uber has introduced several measures to ensure rider and driver safety. Each trip includes helmets for both the rider and the driver, with disposable hair nets provided for hygiene. Drivers are also required to wear high-visibility jackets at all times to increase road safety. Before being allowed to offer rides, all Uber Moto drivers must pass a competency assessment through the Moto Driver Programme. Additionally, just like with other Uber ride options, every trip is tracked in real-time within the app, and emergency assistance features are available for added security.
If the pilot phase proves successful, Uber Moto could become a transformative solution for urban mobility in South Africa. Offering a fast, affordable, and convenient way to travel short distances, it may soon become a preferred alternative for city commuters looking to avoid traffic delays and high transport costs.
